Illustrated a Ukrainian road trip for Solomiya Magazine written by Iryna Zamuruieva 🌾

The piece follows her traveling with her father across central Ukraine, searching for kurgans, ancient burial mounds that now survive as tiny islands of steppe biodiversity in a sea of industrial monoculture.

It’s a story about what’s left of the Ukrainian steppe (very little), and how its erasure comes not only from war, but from decades of extractive farming.

This story launched as part of Stack Magazines’s new project, the Mortar, directed by Steven Watson new project the Mortar, expanding the world of independent publishers they collaborate with.

Art directed by Holly Catford at Esterson Associates.
